How can home and informal carers help with motivation to change?

Sometimes motivation to change is weak or perhaps not there at all – an individual sees no reason to change his or her behaviour, or perhaps varies depending on mood and the company around at different times.  This is a particular problem in compulsive and addictive conditions such as alcohol, drugs, gambling, eating disorders.

While professionals can offer intensive therapeutic sessions focussed on increasing motivation towards positive change, perhaps once a week, once a fortnight, once a month? – family and friends can also help a troubled individual on an everyday basis towards changing behaviour which is having a negative impact on their own life (as well as others around them).

Watching someone behaving in a way which is destructive to their health and wellbeing can be extremely frustrating.  Professionals often feel frustrated when faced with lack of motivation, lack of progress…

And watching someone you care about - and have possibly brought into the world and supported over years – can be very painful as well as extremely frustrating.
